Editorial

Editorial opportunities

NPG publishes a wide range of journals and reference works in the biological and physical sciences, and offers many opportunities for people with a scientific background to pursue editorial careers at the cutting edge of scientific research while working outside the laboratory environment. In the case of the Nature titles, there are no external academic editorial boards, and the in-house editors are fully responsible for all aspects of editorial content.

Research Editors:

Editors' responsibilities include selecting manuscripts for publication, commissioning and editing reviews, News and Views and other 'front-half' material, writing editorials and press releases, and maintaining links with the worldwide scientific community through regular attendance at scientific meetings and visits to research institutions worldwide.

News editors and correspondents:

Nature, Nature Medicine and Nature Biotechnology each have full news sections. The news staff are responsible for writing news stories, commissioning and editing material from freelance contributors, and maintaining links to the research and science policy communities. Like the research editors, news staff are encouraged to attend scientific meetings and visit research institutions on a regular basis.

Copy editors:

The Nature publications place strong emphasis on clarity of presentation, and each title has at least one full-time copy editor. The copy editors work closely with editors, authors and production staff, to ensure that the authors' intended message is communicated as clearly as possible to a broad readership.

Freelance opportunities:

The news and features sections of Nature, Nature Medicine and Nature Biotechnology include regular contributions from freelance science writers. Potential contributors should contact the editor or news editor of the relevant journal.

NPG Specialist Journals:

The specialist journal division comprises more than 30 titles in a variety of research and clinical disciplines. The in-house editorial staff work closely with external academic editors, and are responsible for overseeing each journal's growth and development.

NPG Reference Division:

Each encyclopedia is managed by an in-house publisher or commissioning editor who works closely with an external team of academic editors to guide the work from conceptual development through initial launch to post-launch updating and expansion. The commissioning and review processes are handled by in-house project managers and editorial controllers.
